Motorola Split

It is being reported that Motorola is considering splitting off its handset division into a separate public company.  Motorola’s handset division has been a drag on corporate profits recently as market share has been lost to competitors such as Nokia, LG, Samsung, Blackberry and others.  If the split occurs, there is a strong possibility this new handset division will either be acquired by or partner with an Asian based company for future products.

What this will mean for the cellular phone handset market as a whole will be interesting to see.  Motorola hasn’t had a real knockout handset since introducing the RAZR years ago.  Partnering with one of the Asian manufacturer’s may lead to more cutting edge designs and features for future Motorola phones.
