Samsung has proven itself to make reliable smart phones and the Captivate Glide is no exception. Pantech Pocket Review

The Pantech Pocket is, in a word, untraditional. Measuring 4.52 by 3.07 by 0.44 inches, it definitely stands out with a square look next to the longer and thinner smart phones. While the name may be deceiving, as it probably won’t fit comfortably in your pocket, it is still light and comfortable to hold, with a full plastic build and soft touch, rubberized finish. It’s also light at 4.4 ounces. The 4-inch 600×800 pixel resolution screen is good for a mid-level phone with 16 million color support and text looks crisp and clean. The Pocket runs on Android Gingerbread and Pantech added a few features of their own. On the lock screen there is a circle with spokes coming out to individual apps. Drag the circle up the spoke to the app you want to open when you unlock the screen, taking out a middle step once you unlock the phone. In the middle of the ring is your battery status.

Once the phone is unlocked, you have access to 7 home screens. The Pocket comes preloaded with plenty of apps so you can get going as soon as you open the box. Among these apps are the Google Services, a wide selection of AT&T apps, Facebook, Twitter, and Amazon Kindle. One bonus for the extra wide screen is the keyboard is very roomy. It also has all of the standard smart phone features – Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, multimedia player, and email capabilities. It does have a 5 megapixel camera and 720p HD video capture, however, it does not have a flash and has a fairly long shutter lag. It runs on a single core Qualcomm 1GHz processor. The Pocket has a 2GB memory card preloaded and can support up to a 32GB card.

For an Android smart phone, the Samsung DoubleTime i857 looks like a feature phone, with a flip open design revealing another touch screen and a full QWERTY keyboard. An entry level smart phone, probably aimed at the younger crowd, comes at a budget price from AT&T. The phone measures 4.45 by 2.44 by 0.59, making it thick and compact. It also gives it a more durable feel especially compared to the razor thin phones. The two screens are both 3.2 inches with 320×480 pixel resolution and support 262,144 colors. While the colors may not appear as bright and smooth as other phones, the detail is nice and the text does appear crisp.

They are both touch screens; the front screen can rotate both portrait and landscape and the inside screen is locked into landscape mode. Inside the phone is a 600mHz Qualcomm processor and 256 MB of RAM. The DoubleTime also has Android Froyo. While these specs may not impress some, this smart phone has plenty of power and options for someone just entering the Android market and wants a basic phone not bogged down by bloatware. It also has a 3.2 megapixel camera, video capture, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi hotspot, tethering, multimedia player and email capabilities.

The Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket is another high end smart phone available on the new AT&T 4G LTE network. The body of the phone is 5.11 by 2.71 by 0.37 inches, making it a large phone. It has to be large to house the 4.5 inch screen. The screen literally takes up the entire front of the phone. The home, menu, back and search buttons are right along the bottom edge of the phone because the screen takes up so much room. The screen is 480×800 pixel resolution on a Super AMOLED Plus display that looks fantastic and is extremely responsive. The fast response time is also attributed to the third generation Qualcomm APQ8060 1.5GHz processor.

The Galaxy S II Skyrocket runs apps smoothly, even when you’re running multiple apps. Android Gingerbread 2.3.5, soon to be upgraded to Android Ice Cream Sandwich, and Samsung TouchWiz UI give the phone a nice interface that’s easy to use and organize. Motorola Atrix 2 Review

The Motorola Atrix was a groundbreaking phone when it was released, yet as time went on, the problems with the phone became very apparent. Motorola took the criticism and made some important changes, resulting in the Atrix 2. They increased the screen to 4.3 and removed the Pentile display, so the larger screen looks better, has crisp text and deep colors with 540×960 pixel resolution. Running the Atrix 2 is a dual core 1.5GHz TI OMAP processor. You have the choice between a standard Android keyboard or SWYPE for messaging, texting and web browsing. For the music lovers, an added feature includes the lyrics displayed while the song is playing. While some won’t care, this is a cool and unusual feature to the standard smart phone music player. The sound is deep and full. Web browsing and download speeds are incredibly fast. The HTC Vivid is the first cell phone on the AT&T 4G LTE network and is well prepared for the task at hand. The body of the phone is 5.07 by 2.64 by 0.44 inches and weighs 6.24 ounces, making it larger and heavier than other phones on the AT&T network and not very pocket friendly. However, some of the weight comes from the reinforced steel back, so you know it’ll withstand the day-to-day usage. The 4.5 inch qHD S-LCD display is beyond words. The 540×960 pixel resolution results in 245 ppi, which means fantastic graphics and deep colors. Lines are crisp and clean, which is important for texts, emails and web browsing.

Speaking of web browsing, even in areas that do not have 4G LTE yet, the phone still runs on 4G HSPA+ speeds, which are extremely fast and reliable. So download all the apps, movies, music and documents and get what you need in seconds. The Vivid has Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread and a Qualcomm APP8060 dual core 1.2GHz. Besides the fact that the Vivid is AT&T’s first 4G LTE phone, it also has an incredible 8-megapixel camera. Colors show up very realistic and detail is captured without any problem.
